Why Lake Bled needs to be on your travel bucket list

While the name “Lake Bled” may evoke thoughts of Stephen King horror stories, it’s actually more fitting for a Disney fairytale.

For those familiar with the beauty of California’s Lake Tahoe, especially Fannette Island, Lake Bled will NOT disappoint. Not only does it rival Lake Tahoe for its spectacular scenery, but it is also home to the oldest castle in Slovenia, has superb local cuisine, and is near Triglav National Park.

Lake Bled is a very approachable scenic destination for all skill sets and ages — you don’t have to be an athlete or “outdoors person” to appreciate the outdoor opportunities available. You can take a leisurely walk, conquer a challenging hike, cruise along a bike trail, or float in the emerald-green lake while the pletna boats paddle by. Interested in experiencing a real-life winter wonderland? If you visit the area during winter, then you can ice skate on the lake!

During your visit, keep an eye out for these local critters:

  • Mute swans

  • Grey herons

  • Kingfishers

  • Eagles

  • Pike

  • Carp

  • Trout

  • Pond turtles

  • Lynxes

  • Brown bears

  • Foxes

  • Red and roe deer

  • Red squirrels

The best time to visit is in early autumn, as the area will start to showcase its colorful foliage while avoiding the rainier months of October and November. It’s also a quieter time for tourists, allowing one to fully immerse in the scenery. It’s no coincidence that our 2025 trip is planned for September.

Refuel from your outdoor adventures by chowing down on some Bled famous Kremna Rezina or Bled Cream Cake — a delicious vanilla custard and cream pastry. Pair it with Slovenian wine or local honey liqueur for a complete experience. You can indulge in local lore once you have your Bled Cream Cake and Slovenian wine. No, it isn’t written by Stephen King or any contemporaries. Instead, you’ll be transported back to the 16th century.

According to legend, beneath Lake Bled’s tranquil surface lies a story of love, loss, and a mysterious bell.

Once upon a time, a young widow lived in Bled Castle, nestled just above the lake. Tragically, her husband was murdered by robbers who then threw his body into the lake below. After his death, the widow visited the chapel on the lake island daily, praying to her husband. She decided to honor her husband and her grief by commissioning a memorial piece using all the gold and silver they had to cast a bell to ring in the chapel.

But fate had other plans. A violent storm struck as the bell was transported across the lake, sending the boat and its precious cargo to the depths. Devastated, the widow left Bled behind after selling all of her possessions. Moved by her sorrow and devotion, the Pope had a new bell cast in her honor. Today, visitors to the Church of the Assumption of Mary can ring the bell thrice, hoping the widow hears their wishes for the lake. For couples fortunate enough to book their wedding at the Church of the Assumption of Mary, the groom must plan a strength + cardio training program to carry his bride up the 99 steps into the church if he hopes to have a happy marriage.

Lake Bled is more than just a postcard-perfect destination—it’s a place where history, nature, and legend intertwine to create an unforgettable experience. So, if you’re looking for a destination that blends adventure, relaxation, and a touch of magic, Lake Bled should be at the top of your travel list. After all, where else can you make a wish on a legend, hike through stunning gorges, and end the day with a dessert fit for royalty?
