7-Day Active Slovenia Escape: Mountains, Rivers, and More

Note: The itinerary may adjust due to weather or other conditions.

Day 1 - Welcome to Ljubljana!

We’ll meet in in Slovenia’s charming capital, Ljubljana, and settle into the cozy As Boutique Hotel. Make yourself at home before we gather for a guided walking tour of Ljubljana, exploring its vibrant streets, iconic architecture, and the famous Dragon Bridge. We’ll wrap the night with a Welcome dinner in one of the best restaurants in Ljubljana. Enjoy people watching along the riverbanks, which come alive after dark on warm weekend evenings.  Sweet dreams of the adventure before you!

Day 2 - Julien Alps, Lakes and Waterfalls

Breakfast at the hotel and check-out. Make sure to prepare for an active day—put on your hiking shoes, wear comfortable clothes, and pack a backpack with essentials for the hike. Today, we head to the breathtaking Bohinj Lake, nestled in the heart of the Julian Alps. For adventurous hikers, our local guide will meet us to take a cable car ride up to Vogel. From Vogel, enjoy magnificent panoramic views and embark on an unforgettable hike through the scenic Julian Alps, where the untouched nature and soaring peaks provide an awe-inspiring backdrop. For a less demanding option, take a short 20-30 minute hike to the stunning Savica Waterfall, a majestic sight where water cascades from a sheer rock face. Afterward, enjoy a 4 mile (6-km) walk along the shores of Bohinj Lake, taking in the serene atmosphere and crystal-clear waters as you make your way back to the city center of Bohinj (entrance fee included). Once both groups have finished their adventures, we’ll reconvene at a local restaurant to savor traditional Slovenian delicacies. Afterward, enjoy a short ride to Lake Bled. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and unwind with a welcome drink of local wine. The evening is free for leisure, and you may want to indulge in the relaxing spa services.

Day 3 - Lake Bled

Sleep in a bit, and then shake off the cobwebs with a morning class to ease any muscle tension and work up an appetite. We’ll have a delightful 4-course lunch at the hotel restaurant overlooking the most famous view in Slovenia. In the afternoon, meet your local guide for a tour of Lake Bled. Enjoy a private walking tour of Bled town, followed by a serene ride on a traditional Pletna boat to the island. Climb 99 stone steps to the Church of the Assumption of Mary, where you can ring the famous wishing bell for good fortune. The experience includes learning about the fascinating history and cultural significance of the church and bell. The day wouldn’t be complete without tasting Bled’s famous cream cake, a local dessert beloved throughout Slovenia. We'll end the evening with a 3-course dinner at a charming local restaurant in Bled city center.

Day 4 - Soca River Rafting or Optional Fly Fishing

Kick off the day with a vigorous morning class before breakfast, loosening up for the activities ahead. Today, we are heading on a full-day road trip excursion with your private driver and guide along the Julian Alps. Then, we embark on a thrilling rafting adventure on the Soca River, known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters. The Soča River is one of the most beautiful European rivers and an important natural element of the Triglav National Park. It is famous for its distinct emerald color and vivid rapids in its upper stream. It is 137 km long, and its mysterious spring is in Trenta under the mighty Julian Alps. On the rapids of the Soča River, you will be amazed by our valley's unspoiled nature and hidden gems. Interested in Slovenia's world-class fly fishing? We can arrange an optional fly fishing excursion as an alternative to the rafting trip. Dinner is on your own, allowing you to explore Bled's dining scene.

Day 5 - Hiking in the Kamnik Alps

Fuel up with a big breakfast because today’s adventure will leave you breathless! We’ll transfer to Zgornje Jezersko for a memorable hike. We’ll head straight to the Slovenia-Austria border, where our professional alpine guide will be ready to lead us on an exhilarating trek into the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The hike ascends to an elevation of 1700 meters, taking approximately 4-5 hours and offering awe-inspiring alpine views. For those seeking a more leisurely adventure, a scenic walk through Jezersko Valley will be arranged. This gentler option allows you to explore the enchanting landscapes of the valley, admire the serene waters of Lake Planšarsko Jezero, and take in views of rugged, snow-capped peaks that create a postcard-perfect backdrop. After the morning's activities, we’ll gather to enjoy a casual meal of pizza and beer at a local eatery. Following lunch, check into the charming Vila Planinka Hotel and unwind. Be sure to explore the hotel’s luxurious spa services to rejuvenate after the day’s adventures.

Day 6 - Sommelier Experience and Stargazing

After a delicious morning class to ease alpine-hiking muscles, enjoy a relaxed morning with time for a massage or stroll through the peaceful valley. In the afternoon, we’ll join sommelier Marko Koren on a tasting journey through the finest Slovenian wines, artisanal liqueurs, and cheeses. Gain insights into how to store, drink, and serve these wines, making this experience both educational and delectable. We’ll then continue with an exquisite farewell dinner, celebrating the friendships formed and the memories made during your unforgettable Slovenian journey. We’ll wrap up this journey with a unique tour – Night Hike Under the Stars – ‘Lights Off, Stars On. We’ll meet an alpine guide for an evening hike in the heart of the mountains. Find and identify the stars in the night sky, watch the serene valley, and enjoy an unforgettable surprise! In the heart of the mountains, where light pollution is minimal, and the Milky Way illuminates the night sky, drift to sleep, dreaming of stars and serene mountain views.

Training notes for your active escape

Slovenia is an outdoor adventure destination, and we plan to make the most of it! We will hike in the Alps, raft on the Soca River, chase waterfalls, and earn extravagant meals. Since FitCations are for all, we will divide into groups with two activity levels. Please note that you must disclose any physical issues to us before the trip. We can often make adjustments if we know in advance, or you can take a day to relax and experience the spa culture of Slovenia.

Level 1: You need to be comfortable walking on flat and uneven surfaces for 3-4 miles (5-7k) and navigating stairs with uneven heights. If you have active injuries to your neck or back, please check in with your trainer before the rafting.

Level 2: You need to feel confident on steep trails and narrow switchbacks. The terrain may be muddy and slippery. Distances will be up to 5-6 miles (8-10k) with elevation gains.

As always, we will modify the activities based on the group's needs. We can usually offer opportunities to ramp up or Chillax.

Packing and Travel

The city of Ljubljana is stylish and chic but in the way of outdoor lovers. You might want to pack a little something elegant for our evenings there, but nothing fancy is needed. The rest of our journey focuses on the outdoors. Think of durable, layer-able pieces that are functional for walking and hiking. Average temperatures in September are in the low 70s (Fahrenheit) during the day, dropping about 15 degrees at night. Some rain is likely, so a waterproof layer is a must-have. The rainbows will blow your mind!

  • For your daily activities, your BSF swag bag includes almost everything you’ll need, including a sturdy day pack with a water bladder, water bottle, yoga mat, and bands. Be sure to allow room in your bags to bring your swag home!

  • We recommend traditional fitness clothing that won’t restrict movement and is sweat-wicking/breathable.

  • We will often go from hiking to lunch or site seeing. Athleisure attire such as hiking pants, capris pants, skorts, or stretchy sweats and leggings can cross over for activewear and sightseeing. A rain jacket is essential.

  • Group 1 will need grippy shoes, light layers and a rain jacket.

Group 2 will need hiking shoes with a lugged sole, (preferably water resistant), a fleece or down layer and a good rain jacket. A hat and gloves are optional but couple keep you a little more comfortable. Weather in the alps is unpredictable so you will need to carry multiple layers with you. Hiking poles are highly recommended.

  • Casual chic: Slacks, chinos, nice jeans, skirts, or sundresses will meet the needs for anything on our itinerary.

Layers: Bring a jacket or wrap for when the nights get cool.

  • Water shoes or water sandals: The river and lake shorelines are rocky and difficult to navigate in flip-flops or while barefoot.

Light fitness sneakers: Recommended for fitness classes and can also double during walking tours. Or, bring a pair of trail runners that can do double duty for classes and our hikes.

Sight-seeing shoes: Fashion sneakers are in, Hallelujah! Or choose a comfortable walking shoe or sandal that you’ve done some miles in—you don’t want to get blisters or find out too late that they’re uncomfortable.

Hiking shoes: Group 2 will need hiking shoes with a lugged sole, preferably waterproof or water resistant

Evening shoes: Loafers, sneakers, dress sandals, flats or wedges work well. We recommend avoiding high heels.

    Sample shoe selection:

Women: Hiking shoes, fashion sneakers, sandals, water shoes

Men: trail runners or hiking shoes, fashion sneakers, water shoes

    • Bathing suit for rivers, lakes, and spas

    • Toiletries

    • Mosquito repellant

    • Sunscreen

    • Motion sickness medication or sea bands

    • Rain jacket (essential)

    • Hat / gloves for hiking

    • Sunglasses

    • EU adapter for plugs

    • Travel-sized USB charger

    • Travel wallet (with RFID protection for your security). Also consider uploading a photo of your passport and/or driver’s license to a password-protected cloud storage service (Dropbox, Google, Microsoft) and credit cards to an encrypted mobile wallet. *Do not save photos of identifying information on your phone in case it is stolen.

    • Pro tip: Throw a collapsable extra bag in your suitcase to fit all of your souvenirs for the way back

Keep your face always toward the sunshine–and shadows will fall behind you.
