5 best snorkeling spots on the island of Hawai’i

If you’re looking for a beach scene with white sand and Mai Tais, the island of Hawai’i might not be your first choice. The “Big Island,” the largest in the chain of Hawaiian islands, is known for dramatic lava coastlines contrasting against verdant foliage and azure waters. While there are spots to perfect your tan and sip an icy tropical drink, wildlife enthusiasts seek out the clear waters to connect with its inhabitants and glimpse the world below.

We chatted with Darian “Dreu” Basaldua, one of the island’s top tour guides, to discover his picks for the best snorkeling.

First, here are a few tips to set you up for snorkeling success:

  1. Please don’t step on the coral! It’s a toss-up on what will sustain more damage: your foot or the precious reefs of the island.

  2. Wear reef-safe sunscreen — it’s the law! Look for the designation “reef safe” and steer towards mineral-based cream or lotion instead of a spray or mist.

  3. Appreciate wildlife from a distance. It’s illegal to harass wildlife. If a dolphin or turtle approaches you, it’s okay to allow it to approach passively. But do not chase, touch or follow them. You’re in their home, be a passive houseguest.

  4. If you’re inexperienced in the ocean or not a strong swimmer, stick to the beaches with lifeguards and always bring a buddy.

  5. The early bird catches the worm! Most snorkeling spots are best in the early morning hours as there are fewer crowds, clearer water, and more wildlife sightings.

Dreu shares his words of wisdom on how to choose the best site for your needs and goals.

1. Kahalu'u Beach Park. This park is located in Keauhou and is an incredible spot! There is a shallow access point for beginners and advanced snorkelers alike. There are a lot of facilities here: tables, restrooms, reef informational volunteers, and lifeguards. The north end is a sacred spot, and tons of surf lessons happen here.

2. Honaunau Bay. This bay is nicknamed the "2 Step" due to the volcanic steps that access this bay. Dolphins are common in the early morning hours. There are tons of coral and colors to see and the occasional reef shark. A world-class snorkeling spot and one of the best scuba diving locations in the world!

3. Mahukona. This may not look like much when you pull up, especially if you expect to see a beautiful bay. Instead, it's just a big concrete slab with one outdoor shower. Don’t judge a book by its cover — especially during morning hours. A lot of ocean activity is happening that is sure to impress: sugar mill machine parts scrapped in these waters have created an underwater oasis that is teaming with life! I lost my car keys here once, so if you spot them, please let me know. 😉

4. Kealakekua Bay. Named Captain Cook's monument, this location is where one of the world's most famous explorers was killed for overplaying his hand. When people wonder where the underwater topography from Finding Nemo was based, this is one of the two primary locations and has the reputation of being one of the best snorkeling spots in the world. There are many ways of accessing this bay. My personal favorite is renting a kayak and paddling across the bay. Often in the early morning hours, you can encounter dolphins!

5. Ho'okena Beach. A black sand beach that also has dolphin and shark potential. This area has an outdoor hot water shower, which feels incredible after a day in the ocean. Snorkeling by the cliffside is fantastic and memorable. Plus, of all the options, this is the only one you could stay overnight if you managed to procure a camping permit.

There are several other great snorkel spots on this island, but these are the top five I have the most affection and experience. I hope you have a fantastic day and aloha!
